Twitter & Business Blogging

Hello everyone and thanks to you who participated in class these past two Wednesdays. As a reminder, the last class was divided into two groups taught the same lesson over the past two weeks.

During the last lesson, we discussed Twitter and the best practices to adopt on this platform. We also looked into business blogging and its role in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You'll find a copy below of the presentation given in class:

Twitter accounts

During class, we looked into some of the best practices for creating a Twitter account and learned how to simply use the social network. At the end of the discussion on Twitter, everyone in class had created a Twitter account.

We took advantage of class time to then learn about live-tweeting and how to participate in online discussions using hashtags, the '@' sign and Re-Tweeting (RT).

If you have not yet created a Twitter account, please create one now. Please follow the guidelines in the class presentation.

Business Blogging

We also talked about the importance of blogging for businesses. Google takes into consideration the new content on a company's blog to help provide better ranking (SEO). We also saw how a corporate blog is a great opportunity to inform customers and to engage with them (ex. comments posted after a blogpost). At the end of the class, everyone had created a personal blog explaining their studies at ISCOM.

Class Assignments

Everyone who is following this class must create a Twitter account. If you have not done this yet, please create one before class next Wednesday, 15 May 2013. Students must also create a personal blog using the following critera :
  1. The blog must be about your studies: Global Communications or Marketing,
  2. The blog can be in French or English. Choose the language in which you are most comfortable and professional.
  3. Write a first blogpost introducing your blog explaining what you are studying, and that you will be sharing class work on your blog.
  4. Before class next Wednesday, 15 May 2013, create two additional blogposts. One explaining your infographics, and a second one sharing your Facebook case studies.

Required Reading

Read the chapter on Strategy (pg. 27-29) in the Social Media eBook 2012.

I look forward to seeing all of you in our next class. Until then, good luck with the rest of your classes and have a great holiday break!

4 Concepts in Social Media

Thank you to all of you who participated in class Wednesday. As a reminder, you are allowed to live-tweet during class with the hashtags #ISCOM and #IntroSM.

If you would like to re-read through Wednesday's lesson, or for those of you who were not in class with us, you'll find a copy of the presentation below.

Facebook Case Studies

In class, we discussed a successful Facebook marketing operation lead by McDonald's in America. Through this example, we were able to see how engagement, influence, reach and virality were vital for McDonald's campaign to succeed. Students are reminded that they are required to do the following:
  • Prepare a one slide presentation using the presentation software of their choice (Powerpoint, Keynote, Open Office, etc...).
  • The presentation must include a small description of the campaign as well as a description of the campaign's results. Most importantly, the presentations must be done in English.
  • Please sign your work with either a social media account or your name, which ever you are most comfortable sharing on the internet.
  • Presentations must be e-mailed by 9 April 2013.

Required Reading

Before next week's class, please read the chapters on Twitter (pg. 10-11) and Business Blogging (pg. 15-16)  in the Social Media eBook 2012.

Have a great week everyone!
